Case overview

Date filed 28 April 2008
Current status Rejected
Issue Volkswagen's indirect support of HR violations in China
Summary of the case The German NGO Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker (GfbV) has filed a complaint against Volkswagen for the company's involvement in the promotion of the Olympic torch relay in the run-up to the 2008 Olymic Games in Beijing. According to the NGO by promoting the Olympic torch relay Volkswagen is in breach of the human rights provisions outlined in chapter 2 of the OECD Guidelines. The GfbV accuses Volkswagen that with the promotion of the relay, the company is indirectly responsible for already committed torture and mistreatment of Uyghur people protesting against the relay in the province Xinjiang and triggering more human rights violations in among others Tibet.
Developments/Outcome On 28 April 2008 the Gesellschaft für bedrohte Völker (GfbV) has filed a complaint against Volkswagen for supporting the Olympic torch relay in the run-up to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and thereby indirectly supporting human rights violations in China. The German NCP has rejected the complaint on 3 June 2008. The NCP rejected the complaint becaues the financing of the Olympic torch relay did not show a reference to investment, thereby lacking an investment nexus. Despite the rejection of the complaint the GfbV maintained its criticism of Volkswagen and continued with demonstrations against human rights violations in China in front of Volkswagen's factory sites.
